Psychotherapy

Derived from the Greek words psyche=soul, spirit and therapon= attendant, the psychotherapist is the one who attends to soul.

Deeply grounded in Psychosynthesis – a psychology of hope, I am offering you a space to be. A space to be no matter what your physical condition or behaviour, no matter what your moods and thoughts. A space to appear as you are, feel what we feel, think what you think. Treated like this, a sense of freedom is likely to (re-)emerge for you, carrying you through challenges and suffering and towards a clearer sense of who you are.

I’d be delighted to accompany you!

“Before every session, I take a moment to remember my humanity. There is no experience this person had that I cannot share with them, no fear that I cannot understand, no suffering that I cannot care about, because I too am human. No matter how deep their wound, they do not need to be ashamed in front of me. I too am vulnerable. And because of this, I am enough. Whatever their story, they no longer need to be alone with it. This is what will allow their healing to begin.” (Carl Rogers)

What can Psychotherapy help with?

Some common types of problems addressed in psychotherapy include:

  • Feeling depressed and anxious
  • Loss, grief, and bereavement
  • Divorce and family problems
  • Addictions & substance abuse
  • Health, illness & medical issues
  • Problems with eating & nutrition
  • The longing for meaning & fulfilment

I see clients with a wide range of challenges, including those who are not sure what is going on for them physically or emotionally as well as those who have been diagnosed with a mental health problem, such as depression, anxiety or eating disorders. I also have ten years of experiences in cancer care and worked with patients as well their loved ones.

Many common psychologies and psychotherapy treatments seem to have lost the animating sense of soul in any human experience. Often treatment is focussed on fixing problems or eliminating symptoms and to bring the person back to the ordinary state of functioning. Whilst this is a way surviving, the opportunity is missed to help understand the deeper message. An important message with pointers towards new directions often lie at the heart of our struggles and suffering.

For my practice, this means problematic experiences and harmful behaviours will be addressed and treated in the process of growing and becoming. I therefore acknowledge the medical view of symptom categorization and diagnoses where useful yet hold a more sensitive and life-giving lens towards what is going on for you beneath.

I hold a wholesome and holistic perspective and won’t reduce you to your problem or symptom!

Many of us lead lives of quiet desperation before reaching out to help break the spells of history, social conditioning, stigma and so forth. Sometimes the consistent knocking within us is amplified over time, and we begin to listen. Sometimes it needs a transformative experience, or a life crisis, to shake us awake from a state of trance. We begin to seek a way to face whatever is troubling us. We thereby bring back to life lost aspects of ourselves which we need to move forwards and to feel whole – perhaps for the first time in our lives.

"My soul tells me, we were all broken from the same nameless heart, and every living thing wakes with a piece of that original heart aching its way into blossom. This is why we know each other below our strangeness, why when we fall, we lift each other, or when in pain, we hold each other, why when sudden with joy, we dance together. Life is the many pieces of that great heart loving itself back together." (Mark Nepo)

What to expect from Psychotherapy?

At your appointment, you’ll be encouraged to talk about what you are experiencing even if you think you have no clue what is happening.

I can help you gain a better understanding of your feelings and thought processes, and I’ll help you find your own solutions to problems. Most importantly, our shared space, our company and presence to your issues will help meaning and direction to emerge.

Sometimes it can be very difficult to talk about what is happening, and more often than not, opening up is obstructed by a sense of numbness and resistance to connect to feeling and experiencing. The therapy I am offering can also help with that. Therapy is often very soothing in times of difficulties.

How to decide if you'd like to work with me or not?

Send me an email at jessica.komes@gmail.com or whatsapp via 07518 498093 and we can arrange for a short free video consultation (approx.15min).

The chemistry needs to be right and you most probably will know if you could open up to me after we first spoke.

How long will we be working together?

This entirely depends on the circumstances, a problem-based counselling approach is usually considered short term (up to 20sessions) or medium term (20-40sessions) work.

Similar to other psychotherapeutic models, Psychosynthesis Therapy offers an in-depth approach to mental health which, in order to provide lasting change to your wellbeing, may take well over 40 sessions.

You don't have to know yet, we can find out together what suits you and how to make sure you feel confident and comfortable about deciding to continue or end our working relationship.

How long is a session and how much does it cost?

The first session is usually 90min and will inform context, purpose and aims of our work. The subsequent sessions last 60min. I usually charge about 90€. We can discuss individual circumstances.
